What advice would you give a high school student about to go to college?

First of all, I want to clarify that my comment will be based on my personal experience. I would tell a high school student from Chile to focus on his high school grades, since the current educational system requires a certain level of grades to apply and stay in a respective career at university. This, because the grades you get on your entire highschool cannot be changed. For this reason and from a very personal point of view, it is very important to prioritize those qualifications over something else.

You also have to consider the test that allows you to enter the university, that is, the PTU. However, it can be taken as many times as you like so it is not as drastic as the high school grades. I took the PSU twice, since the first time I did not reach the score for my aspirations. But, the second time it went well for me, and I was able to get into what I wanted.

Having said all of the above, the advice that a I would give to a highscholl student are; Prioritize your grades from school and think carefully about what and where you want to study, since you can take the PTU many times.

  1. I agree with you, they are good advice and all those interested should follow them to be able to enter a study house since, as you mentioned, within this system it is important that they take care of their qualifications and think well before choosing.

  2. Hi Vicho!
I think your advice is good. Unfortunately our education system is only concerned about qualifications which almost all the time don't reflect the learning in someone. Also, the test that is used in Chile to go to college like the PSU or PTU should be changed, and hopefully they will do it soon, greetings.

  3. Hi!
I think worrying about grades at school is good advice because is important have a good base to enter a college. In addition, the PTU can be given as many times as you want.

  4. Hello Vicente.

I agree with you. Is very important have good qualifications in the school for the final score like the NEM and the Ranking. In addition, I will add that the PTU or PSU continues to be a class mechanism for admission to some Universities. In my vision, a test does not define whether you are a good or a bad student. But lamentably, fot to enter a University should be enter in this education system with is the NEM, the Ranking and the PTU.

  5. Hi Vicho!

Your advice is very clear. The problem is that unfortunately in the weighted score to get into university are not much considered the school grades. For example, in Journalism they only ask for 10% of the NEM. With regard to the PTU, I sincerely hate that test. If you are interested, I invite you to visit my blog to read my opinion about that process. :D
I hope that in the future high school grades will have more weight than the PTU score. Or better yet, I hope the university access system changes.
    Greetings!

  6. Hi, nice advice ;)
I didn`t know much about the NEM or ranking, because my high school was different, but now I realize how importint is.
If you want to study medicine, for example, it`s not enough to get a good score on the PTU, also you need to have a good NEM and ranking.

  7. Hello.
I feel like it's very good advice. I would also tell you to prioritize your high school grades. Without my good grades I would not be here now (because I did very badly at PTU)
So that is very good advice. Also (I) would tell you that you really enjoyed your experience at school. Because it's different, at least I didn't do it because I was studying and changing schools.
It is also very important to see where you want to study, what you are really passionate about, and to see the curriculum. I feel that it is something fundamental.
My opinion. Have a nice week <3
